COUNCIL

Business of Public Interest Transacted.

Offer Accepted from Mr. Carnegie to Construct Library Building in Wooster.

Regular meeting of the Wooster City Council was held Monday evening, all the ten members being present, except Mr. Callahan and Mr. Kinney. President marcus Van nest in the Chair.

Minutes of last meeting were read by City Clerk, James B. Minier. Approved.

A petition signed by residents of North Market street, asking for an equitable distribution of eachof their proportionate shares of the sum paid into the City Treasury by the Electric Railway Company, covering the original cost of the seven foot strip of street paving torn up by said Railway Company. A.D. Metz, Esq., appeared on behalf of the petitioners, and made argument as to the unquestioned right to their share of re-imbursement, which was coincided to be true, and the petition unanimously referred to Finance Committee for favorable action.

RESOLUTION ADOPTED TO ACCEPT MR. CARNAGIE’S OFFER OF LIBRARY BUILDING.

City Clerk Minier read a resolution, which is officially published in another column, whereby Hon. Andrew Carnagie, of the city of New York, donates to the city of Wooster, Ohio, the sum of $12,500 for the construction of a Public Library building, on condition that the city raise, by taxation annually, $1,250 for the support and maintenance of the Library.

Mr. James Mullins was present and read the personal letter to him from Mr. Carnagie, which is published in another column, and made earnest remarks about the establishment of the Free Library. Mr. Mullins is always at the fore-front of every business benevolent and educational enterprise in Wooster, and he personally subscribed $500 to this project. A.D. Metz also made good remarks on the subject expecially as to the power under the State law, for the City Board of Education to assist in the establishment of this public library. The result was that, under the suspension of rules the resolution was given three readins, and unanimously adopted by vote of all members of council. And an engrossed copy ordered to be forwarded to Mr. Carnagie. The resolution is published in full in another column of this paper.
