Obituary of Stanley R. Welty, Jr.

WOOSTER -- Stanley R. Welty Jr., died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2007, at his home having fulfilled his life-time desire to serve his community. Stanley believed that "to those who much is given, much is required," and he left a legacy of giving of his time, talents and treasures to the community he loved.

Born on June 18, 1929, in Warren, Stan graduated from Wooster High School and then went on to earn a bachelor of science degree in business administration at Tusculum College in Greenville, Tenn,. He later did graduate work at the Ohio State University and went on to serve four years during the Korean War in the U.S. Air Force before beginning his career in industry.

Stan joined the Armstrong Cork Co. in Lancaster, Pa., a company which in later years sold his division to Kerr Glass. He served the company for more than 26 years in various production, planning and manufacturing positions in both Pennsylvania and Indiana. He joined the Wooster Brush Co. in 1982 and then became president in June 1985, a capacity in which he stayed for 13 years until hist retirement in 1998. Stan served 27 years as a member of the board of directors of the Wooster Brush Co., a position he held at the time of his death.

While at the Wooster Brush Co., Sta returned to his alma mater as a member of its Board of Trustees, where he became chairman of the board, a position he held for seven years. In 1992, Stan was awarded the Tusculum Pioneer Award, and then in 1997, he received the Tusculum College Distinguished Alumni Award. His ultimate award came in December 2005, when he received an honorary doctorate from his Tennessee alma mater At that time, the Tusculum College residence hall in which Welty lived as a student, Craig Hall was renamed Welty-Craig Hall and a portrait of Stan was placed in the lobby of the residence hall.

Stan served as a Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America and as a member of the Rotary Club of Wooster, ARK Lodge 33 F&AM Wilbur Welty Post 147 American Legion, The National Right to Work Committee, The Business-Industry Political Action Committee, Western Reserve Society Sons of the American Revolution and the United Methodist Church of Wooster.

Stan served for 12 years on the board of trustees of The College of Wooster and was active in the ad hoc committee that resulted in the Wooster Streetscape project. Last fall, he was involved in the committee to "Pass the Levy for a new public library."

Stan continually shared his talents and passions with a broad array of local nonprofit organizations by serving on the advisory board of the Salvation Army of Wooster and chairman of the board for Goodwill Industries of Wayne County, president of Rockland Housing Corp., director of Junior Achievement of Wayne County, the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society.

He also led successful building fund drives for the Wayne County Historical Society, the Salvation Army Wooster Corps and Goodwill Industries of Wayne County.

Stan was honored as the first honorary chairperson of the United Way of Wayne and Holmes Counties Annual Campaign. The organization then created the Stanley's' Cup Award, an award named in honor of Welty and Stanley Gault, and given to area businesses and industries exhibiting the community commitment with with both men were synonymous.

During his lifetime, the following awards were bestowed upon him because of his exemplary community service; 1991, Salvation Army Other's Award; 1994, Goodwill Industries Lifetime Achievement Award; 1994 Wayne County Historical Society Distinguished Service Award; 1997 Wooster Chamber of Commerce "Wall of Fame Award"; 2007 Daughter's of American Revolution Medal of Honor; 2007 key to the city of Wooster.

Stan is survived by his wife, Janet; his three children, Kay Welty and Nabil Bouanane of Lancaster, Pa., Susan and Patrick Baker of Richfield and Stan and Carmen Welty III of Charlotte, N. C.; and grandchildren, Christina and Troy Welty.

Memorial services will be Saturday, Sept. 8, at 11 a.m. at United Methdist Church of Wooster with Rev. Dr. David Wilcox and Major Mary West officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service. McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster, is assisting the family with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Salvation Army Wooster Corps, 437 S. Market St., Wooster 44691. [1]
