City Mourns a Friend, Stanley Welty Jr.

WOOSTER -- The community lost one of its pillars Tuesday when Stanley R. Welty Jr., former president of the Wooster Brush Co., died. He was 78.

Friends described the businessman and philanthropist as a one-of-a-kind person who was willing to roll up sleeves and get involved in a variety of projects to help those in need.

Stan Welty was truly one of our community's greatest citizens," said Stanley Gault, former chief executive officer of Rubbermaid. "Not only was he a highly successful business leader, but he was equally successful with his deep and effective involvement in the Salvation Army, United Way, The College of Wooster, the United Methodist Church of Wooster and many other organizations.

"I lost a great friend with the passing of Stan Welty."

"He made sure those less fortunate got what they needed to get a second chance in life," Maj. Mary West of the Salvation Army said. "He was Mr. Salvation Army in many ways. The Salvation Army owes him so much."

"He was a man of great compassion," said Brenda Linnick, executive director of the United Way of Wayne and Holmes Counties. "He truly gave to make a difference in people's lives. He never did it for recognition. He did it because of his compassion for other human beings."

Welty preferred to work behind the scenes and avoid the public spotlight. When Welty was named to the Wooster Area Chamber of Commerce's Wall of Fame in 1997, he said it actually was a recognition of all of the Wooster Brush's staff.

In 1985, Welty became the seventy president of Wooster Brush. His father, Stanley R. Welty, served as president from 1949-1969.

"He had a knack of knowing how to motivate people and get them to come up with ideas," said Al Rodd, who became president, in addition to treasurer, after Welty's retirement in 1998.

During Welty's tenure at the helm of Wooster Brush, Rodd said the company went through exponential growth, including four building expansions.

Because or his work with Wooster Brush, he was a man who understood the human relations part of The College of Wooster, said Stan Hales, the school's former president. Welty became a trustee of the college in 1991 and was trustee emeritus at the time of his death.

Hales said he saw how Welty dealt with the college's personnel positively and effectively.

"He had a sensibility and sensitivity to human resources and staff," Hales said. "He was always appreciated by the staff. There was a warm and personal side to him. I relied on him for good judgement."

"He was always there to support Wooster and Wooster projects," Mayor Judi Mitten said. "He was quiet, but he was always willing to give an opinion."

"I never heard a bad word about Stan," said Ralph Jones, founder of Wooster Glass Co. and a friend of Welty's. "He was always trying to help somebody. There'll never be another Stan Welty."

"He was a community leader by every definition. He did a lot for this community," said Greg Long of Long, Coll & Samsa. "Stan Welty did not just sign up in name only. He would be leading the charge up the hill. He was a hands-on guy. He was a real pillar."

Welty used to wear a hat that read, "110 percent."

Linnick said he expected that of himself and of others. "He used to say, 'If it is to be, it is up to me,'" she said. "He believed to those who were given much, much was expected. He led by example. He never asked anyone to do something he would not do himself."

The United Way named an award -- The Stanleys' Cup -- in honor of Welty and Stan Gault. It is presented to companies that actively promote volunteerism, share their expertise with the community and who leaders are actively involved in community.

Mike Reardon, president of United Titanium, accepted the award from Welty this past March. He said it was an honor to receive the award from one of the men whose lives set the standards for it.

West said Welty was a mentor to her and like a father.

"I will miss the daily input of him helping me with checks and balances to make sure the Salvation Army is delivering the best possible service it could," West said. "He held me to a standard no one ever held me to. He made me better than I ever thought I could be. I am a better person for having known him.

"If there was ever a gentle giants that was him"

Welty serviced as chairman ad honorary chairman of several capital campaigns with the United Way of Wayne and Holmes Counties, Goodwill Industries of Wayne and Holmes Counties, The College of Wooster and [College] (his alma mater) in Tennessee. he was a trustee and a benefactor of Tusculum. Benefactor is a designation reserved for those who donate more than $1 million over a lifetime to the school.

The cause of Welty's death has not been determined, but he suffered from coronary disease for the past couple of months.

Welty was born June 18, 1929, in Warren. Survivors include his wife, Janet; three children Kay Welty (Nabil Bouanane), Lancaster, Pa., Susan (Patrick) Baker, Macedonia, and Stanley R. (Carmen) Welty III, Charlotte, N.C.; and two grandchildren. [2]
