Coal has been primarily in the eastern portion of Wayne County, Ohio. Some coal has been found in Canaan Township and Milton Township. Larger portions have been found in Chippewa, Baughman, East Union and Salt Creek. All of Sugar Creek and Paint Township have coal. Small portions could be found in Green, Franklin and Clinton Townships. The most commonly known area for mining coal was in Chippewa Township in an area that came to be known as Rogues Hollow.
Coal has not been the only mineral deposits found in Wayne County, Ohio.
