[[Stibbs (surname)|Stibbs]], who erected the building, and a general dry goods house was opened by Mr. Edwin [[French (surname)|French]], who was succeeded by [[D. H. King & Company]], who was followed by [[George Plumber & Company]], in 1859. In 1864 Mr. Plumber retired and the name of the firm became [[R. R. Donnelly & Company]], and at the death of the senior member of this firm in 1874, when after one year in the hands of the administrator the present firm assumed the control.
