Comprehensive History

David Nice came to Wooster, Ohio in 1873, and then worked with William Rice in a book bindery. After the death of Jonas Nachtrieb in 1879, David Nice bought out the Nachtrieb stock of hats and caps, and to it added a line of gentlemens furnishing goods and for several years kept the old Nachtrieb stand. In the Spring of 1885 he united with three other people in the purchase of the old Childs building block, and the store room was then remodeled and fitted up for the special use of David Nice and was considered one of the most complete business rooms in the city. For a number of years the business flourished, but on Christmas eve of 1894 he met with business reverses and had to file what was essentially bankruptcy for unpaid bills from creditors.

Mr. Nice has been engaged in business here since 1880, has occupied his present location for nearly two years, and it is no exaggeration of fact to state that he hold a leading position in these departments of commercial pursuits, and not only in the completeness of his stock but in the executive ability and enterprise which have characterized his transactions he has promoted in a marked degree the business interests of Wooster, and drawn and secured trade to this city which would otherwise have been diverted to other trade centers. The stock carried embraces newest styles of hats and caps, from the ordinary palm leaf and straw to fine silk and plush hats, also gentlemen's furnishing goods in latest novelties, boots, shoes, slippers and rubber goods, for men, women, boys, misses and children. These goods are carefully selected from the best manufacturers, and are noted for neatness of style and durable qualities. Since his association with the business interests of this city and county, it is but justice to state that no one has exerted a more intelligent and earnest disposition to promote the fame and best interests of this municipality.
