Michael Nachtrieb
Our most famouse painter was born in Wooster on August 28, 1835, the son of Jones Nachtrieb. He left Wooster, Ohio to pursue his art studies in New York. At the beginning of the Civil War he enlisted at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and served in the cavalry with Sherman in the March to the Sea. After the war, he resumed his painting career. His first important work was decorating cabins and salons of the packets that were on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. These were luxury boats used by many persons of wealth and high position. One of his painting of Robert E. Lee hangs in the great hall of Stratford, Lee's home for many years in Virginia. Dozens of portraits were painted of General Lee and this one was considered by his family as one of the finest. Paintings done by Mr. Nachtrieb may be found in the Wayne County Court House, the Wayne County Historical Society and the College of Wooster.
