"Austin L. Thompson, Democratic candidate for County Commissioner, was born in Chester township in 1866. He was raised by his grandparents, who resided in Congress township, and attended the Congress Township Schools and later the Congress High School. Later he attended the Smithville Academy, taught by J. B. Eberly. At 17 he took up the work of teaching school, farming in the summer time, and teaching school in the winter for a period of 20 winters, during which he arranged to attend normal school at Ada for one winter. He is one of the successful farmers of East Union township, having moved there 18 years ago.

Mr. Thompson has been entrusted with the settlement of a number of estates and appointed guardian of children. He is the President and organizer of the Wayne County Telephone Co.. He called the first meeting in the school house at Easter Union Township to start the company, which has spread like a net work all over Wayne County, connecting the homes of farmers at the lowest possible cost, with telephone service.

At the primaries, his neighbors and friends, realizing what he had done in furnishing cheap telephone service for the people of Wayne County, gave him their unanimous support, and it is safe to say that at the coming election both Republicans and Democrats, who have had the benefit of this low priced service, will rally to his support and he will be elected by a large majority."
