Andrew Carnegie Makes and Addition to his Gift for Wooster’s Public Library –Site of Building

In a reply to a request from james Mullins, acting in behalf of Wooster public library trustees, Andrew Carnegie has increased his gift to Wooster for a public library building to $15,000. Mr. Mullins called his attention to the law passed by the Ohio legislature empowering boards of education to levy a tax of one mill annually for the support of libraries. He stated that the board had agreed to thus provide $1500 per year for the maintenance of the library if Mr. Carnegie would increase his donation to #15,000, in view of increased cost of labor, building material, etc.

The answer was as follows: “Skibo Castle, Ardgay, N.B. May 22, 1903 “James Mullins, Esq, Pres. Library Trustees, Wooster Ohio. “Dear Sir: --Your letter of April 17th received. In response to your request, Mr. Carnegie agrees to increase his library donation in Wooster to $15,000 in consideration of the town increasing its guarantee to $1,500 per year.

“Respectfully yours, Jas. Bertram, Private Secretary.”

At a meeting of the board of library trustees and the board of education held last Thursday evening the location of the new librry sites were mentioned, the ward school building on the corner of Walnut and Larwill sts., the old Quinby opera house lot and the Larwill lot on the corner of Larwill and N. Market sts. The latter was considered most desirable by the majority and a preposition as to price will be submitted to the Larwill heirs.
