LIBRARY

To Be Located on North Market Street.

The Final Choice of Three Sites Carnegie Increases His Gift to $15,000

At a meeting of the trustees of the free library association and the city board of education held in the office of A.D. Metz Thursday night, the question of a site for the public library building was discussed thoroughly. The three principle sites spoken of were the Old Quinby Opera House lot on East Larwill street, the Larwill homestead on North Market street, and the old Third ward school house lot on north Walnut street. It was decided however, to accept the old Larwill property on North Market street, this being thought a more convenient place than the other two.

ADDITIONAL GIFT

From the fact that the law of Ohio gives boards of education the power to levy a tax of one mill annually for the maintenance of libraries, and that with such a levy, the City Board can raise $1,500 per annum; it was decided to ask Mr. Carnegie to increase his gift from $12,500 to $15,00, to which effect Mr. Mullins wrote a letter, receiving the following reply:

Skibo Castle, Ardgay, N.B May 22. 1903 “James Mullins, Esq., Pres. Library Trustees, Wooster, Ohio. “Dear Sir: --Your letter of April 17th received. In response to your request, Mr. Carnegie agrees to increase his library donation in Wooster to $15,000 in consideration of the town increasing its guarantee to #1,500 per year. “Respectfully yours, “Jas. Bertram, “Private Secretary.”
