Quick Facts

  • 1819 - The first school in Congress was housed in the first log cabin to be built on the site of the later Congress school. John Totten was the first teach at the school.[1]
  • An old frame school was built in the same location as the later Congress school.[2]
  • The old frame school was moved across the driveway to the Congress town hall.[3]
  • 1904 - A brick school was built near the Village center and could be accessed by the alley off S.R. 539 or off S.R. 604. L. S. Knight, Head teacher; E. H. Eicher, School board member.[4]
  • 1922 - First part of the building was added with the tower and bell with a cost of $17,000.[5]
  • 1922-23 - The auditorium was built costing $170,000.[6]
  • Before adding more additions to the school two country schoolhouses were placed on the south side of the building. These were used for extra classrooms until the next phase of construction could begin.[7]
  • Pre-1952 - Contained grades 1-12.
  • 1952 - Used only as Congress High School with Congress elementary student being sent to West Salem Elementary School or Chester Elementary School[8]
  • 1953 - Representation an expenditure of $100,000.00.[9]
