The Shack, oftentimes simply referred to as Shack,[1] was a well-loved institution located at 437 E. Pine St.. It was operated by Bill Syrios (known as William Syriopoulos until shortening the family name in the 1940's [2]) until his death in 1957 [3] Under his care, the Shack grew from a cafe to a restaurant [4] and earned its reputation as a "home away from home" for many College of Wooster students [5]. After Bill Syrios' death, the business continued to stay in the family. Bill's sons, Menelaus and Gus, daughter Anna, and wife Mary, all had turns running the business until 1973 [6]. Between 1974 and 1993, the location passed through several owners and was home to a number of business types. The Shack returned under the ownership of Greg Wutcher in 1993 [7]. Lois Rogers, Gloria Mohr, Mike Morris, and Matt Watts were subsequent owners of the restaurant. The building located at 437 E. Pine St. met its demise in 2014 after suffering considerable damage from burst pipes [8].
