Tax list records

  • Nicholas and wife Elizabeth owned property in East Union Township, Wayne County, Ohio and Wooster Township, Wayne County, Ohio. This Nicholas Smith was very active in the community and held several political positions. He is descendant from Philip Schmidt. Nicholas and Elizabeth had no children of their own, as mentioned in the Philip Schmidt family history. However, they raised the children of Nicholas Smith’s brother. This particular Nicholas Smith died 1832. There were four children of this Nicholas Smith listed in his will: George, Valentine G., Allen, and Sarah Smith. (Note: These were the probable children of Nicholas’ deceased brother George.)
  • Nicholas and wife Abigal Smith. They owned property in Franklin Township, Wayne County, Ohio. He died intestate September/October 1839. Based on his approximate age given in the US census records, he was born between 1780 and 1790. He left minor children as named in guardianship papers: George P. Smith, Henry A. Smith, and Eleanor Smith. This family ultimately moved west, landing in the Washington Territory. I am not sure of their presence from October 1844 until the family appears in the 1860 census for Washington Territory.
