Notes

  • No where is all my research did I come across a reference of a Reverence Nicholas Smith nor a Nicholas Smith that helped to build a church in Wooster.

Occupations of

  • Ministers
    • Smith, A. M. 1850 Plain Lutheran
    • Smith, August 1859 . Baptist
    • Smith, D. W. 1873 Plain Lutheran

Probate Court

  • Guardianship papers for Henry Smith, minor orphan of Nicholas Smith (Probate Court files S-203 and S-207).
  • Estate papers or Nicholas Smith, probated 3 October 1839, listing Abigail Smith as the administrator and bondsmen Ben Lawrence and John Alexander (Probate Court file S-117).

Tax list

• There is a guardianship for minor children of Nicholas Smith: James and Catherine. James guardian was Josiah Hitchcock and bondsmen James McFadden. Catherine’s guardian is listed as James McFadden and bondsmen Josiah Hitchcock. These are date 1836. • There is a Nicholas Smith with wife Leah Tracey (married Wayne Co, 26 Nov 1826) who purchased property with J. McFadden in Salt Creek Township, Wayne Co, Ohio. He died intestate June 1838. There are also guardianship papers for McCoy, Elias, and Phebe Smith, all minor children of Nicholas Smith. The bondsmen for these guardianships were Ben Lawrence and Adam Geitgey, dated 1838. This Nicholas Smith owned property in Salt Creek Township, Wayne County, Ohio and Wooster Township, Wayne County, Ohio.

While researching the family, I came across many challenges. I do not guarantee my work – I tried the best I could give the time invested in the research. There were seven Nicholas Smith individuals I was attempting to sort through, all with paper sources dating in the 1820s and 1830s. A couple of them I decided were one-in-the-same Nicholas Smith. The following has been determined from the research.

• Nicholas and wife Elizabeth owned property in East Union Twp and Wooster Twp. This Nicholas Smith was very active in the community and held several political positions. He is descendant from Philip Schmidt. Nicholas and Elizabeth had no children of their own, as mentioned in the Philip Schmidt family history. However, they raised the children of Nicholas Smith’s brother. This particular Nicholas Smith died 1832. There were four children of this Nicholas Smith listed in his will: George, Valentine G., Allen, and Sarah Smith. (Note: These were the probable children of Nicholas’ deceased brother George.) • Nicholas and wife Abigal Smith. They owned property in Franklin Twp, Wayne Co, OH. He died intestate September/October 1839. Based on his approximate age given in the US census records, he was born between 1780 and 1790. He left minor children as named in guardianship papers: George P. Smith, Henry A. Smith, and Eleanor Smith. This family ultimately moved west, landing in the Washington Territory. I am not sure of their presence from October 1844 until the family appears in the 1860 census for Washington Territory.

Trying to sort through everything had been quite challenging. I am including a time line providing known information on Nicholas and Abigal Smith. Also, I am including the following items that relate to the Nicholas and Abigal Smith family:
