Established in 1872, the company was located just west of Wooster "because of the very fine shale deposit in this area"[1]. Initially established to produce paving brick for highway construction, the company later expanded its products to foundation tile and architectural face brick. As of 1957, the company still did not rely on "modern mass producing equipment" in order to create its products, instead employing craftsmen dedicated to making quality building materials[2].
