There was a previous schoolhouse close by.  In 1849 the Board of Educational Services purchased a lot which a school was built on from a [[Daniel Lawrence]].  The lot was along a then road, located in the Northeast Quarter of Section 28.  This was called Science Point, and contained the school building destroyed by fire in 1875.
