History

Maple Grove School in Plain Township (district number 4) was dedicated on Saturday evening, October 17, 1875. The previous school had been destroyed by fire earlier in 1875. The school contained a basement in which the furnace was located. The building had black oiled floors. The school was located right next to Maple Grove Church and Maple Grove Cemetery.

There was a previous schoolhouse close by. In 1849 the Board of Educational Services purchased a lot which a school was built on from a Daniel Lawrence. The lot was along a then road, located in the Northeast Quarter of Section 28. This was called Science Point, and contained the school building destroyed by fire in 1875. There is more information on this school and some of its teachers in the file on Plain Township schools located in the Genealogy Department.
