Grandstand At Fair Grounds Is Condemned: Funds from one-mill levy to be voted on in November, would replace it

  • State Fire Marshal Frank D. Henry, Columbus, notified officials of the Wayne County Agricultural Society on Saturday that the grand stand at the fair grounds has been condemned.

Representatives of the State Fire Marshal's office inspected the local grandstand on September 28th and at that time advised fair board officials that the grandstand would be condemned. This matter was presented to a special joint meeting of the fair board and county commissioners on October 1st.

After thorough consideration of this matter by both boards it was decided that the only solution to the problem which confronts the local fair is the submission of a 1-mill levy for one year to provide funds for the erection of a new grandstand.

The condemned grandstand erected in 1900, has been entirely inadequate for the past several years to accommodate the increasing crowds patronizing the Wayne county fair. At the direction of the State Fire Marshal, the fair board has at different times in recent years made extensive repairs to the old grandstand to make it safe for occupancy, but the fire marshal now refuses to give permission for its further use.

The fair board feels that they should cooperate with the State Fire Marshal and remove the present grandstand because of the danger of extensive damage suits against the county taxpayers should the old grandstand collapse while in use.

The exhibits, attendance and gate receipts have increased rapidly in recent years until the Wayne County Fair stands near the top among such institutions in Ohio. The attendance on several occasions has reached the 25,000 mark daily in recent years. Although the Wayne County Fair was second in the state in gate receipt last year, it ranked bt seventeenth in grandstand receipts due to the small capacity of the stand which was built to accommodate crowds 35 years ago. [5]
