Farmers Hotel, like many businesses in Wooster, Ohio went through a number of changes during its history. It was originally mentioned in the Williams' Akron, Wooster & Cuyahoga Falls Directory of 1859 as being located on the north side of W. Liberty St. between Walnut St. and Grant St.[1] By 1884 it had relocated to 21 N. Buckeye St. and was being run as a boarding house by A. W. Melsheimer. [2] The property went on to be the home and business location of John Markel, a cooper. [3] By 1900 it was again being operated as a boarding house. [4] Markel would continue as the proprietor of the Farmers Hotel through at least 1904. [5] In September of 1907 the bones of a human leg were discovered during the building's demolition. [6]
