He was born on February 29, 1789 near [[Greensburg, Westmoreland County Pennsylvania]]. In 1824 he married Clarissa Lawrence of [[Wooster, Ohio]] and they had four children together: Jane (b. 1832), Edward (b. 1834), Zillah, and Thomas. Joseph's wife, Clarissa, died on November 28, 1836.

Edward G. Clingan was the son of Joseph Clingan and Clarissa Clingan (Lawrence) Clingan; Joseph Clingan was the editor of the Wooster Spectator newspaper in the 1820s. He was born on February 29, 1789 near Greensburg, Westmoreland County Pennsylvania. In 1824 he married Clarissa Lawrence of Wooster, Ohio and they had four children together: Jane (b. 1832), Edward (b. 1834), Zillah, and Thomas. Joseph's wife, Clarissa, died on November 28, 1836.

Their son, Edward G. Clingan, was a photographer in Wooster, Ohio from about 1860-1876 and in Canton, Ohio from about 1864-1866. E. G. Clingan was also a poet, and one of his verses, "Bell McClain," was published in Bennett's Magazine. On June 25, 1868 Edward Clingan married Lovina "Vinnie" Ewing in Wooster Ohio. They had two children: Cora Clingan (b. Oct. 6, 1869), and Joseph E. Clingan (b. Aug.2, 1873).

Edward G. Clingan died on January 15, 1887.
