Comprehensive History

Canaan Evangelical Lutheran Church located at 10851 Friendsville Road, Creston was established in 1830. It was previously located a short distance north of the present building that was erected in 1964. About 1830, or perhaps earlier, Lutheran services were conducted by Rev. Henry Weygandt in the Canaan area in homes and schoolhouses. Shortly after 1830 and until 1870 worship services were held in what was known as "Kopp's Church" by both Lutheran & German Reformed. Kopp's Church was located about 1 1/2 miles south of the present church. The Lutherans and the German Reformed owned the property jointly until about 1868 when the Reformed congregation moved to Canaan. Sources found for this church were; 150th Anniversary Canaan Evangelical Lutheran Church booklet (located in Genealogy Dept. at Wayne County Public Library), Wipert’s Church Histories of Wayne County, Ohio and History of Wayne County, Ohio, 1987, page 54.
