In 1895, [[Alvin Rich]] and his brother-in-law, J. P. Blough, rented the [[Howard Corner]] on [[E. Liberty St., Wooster, Ohio|E. Liberty St.]] and opened a hardware store.<ref>Jacksonian. Wooster, Ohio, February 21, 1895.</ref> A few years later he became sole proprietor of his own hardware store, Alvin Rich & Co., at the location later occupied by the [[Beulah Bechtel Shop, The|Beulah Bechtel Shop]] in the [[Quinby Building (1890)|1890 Quinby Building]] on [[E. Liberty St., Wooster, Ohio|E. Liberty St.]]. This retail outlet offered an extensive inventory of 24,000 items- which 8,000 which were on display.
