- 1874 - West Salem Academy was built in 1874 for $35,000. The West wing only portion completed at this time. A school hall and two room built under were added later.[1]
- The school lot was located on 4 acres. The structure was 102 feet long x 75 feet wide and 40 feet high with a steep roof and tower. The foundation consisted of hand-carved sandstone blocks 18x24 inch thick delivered to the site by mules and horses. The school was considered the finest school in Wayne County except for the one in Wooster.[2]
- 1877 - 11 rooms, 350 student desks, large hall with seating 700 people, library with 400 volumes considered the finest in Wayne County of the 19th Century.[3]
- School served as a complete school district being both a high school and grade school with grades one through twelve.[4]
- Most classrooms were double with the teacher instructing two grade levels.[5]
- Student came from within one mile radius of West Salem. Most student walked to school with a few coming by the streetcar line from the Polk and Albion area.[6]
- Some students would remain in West Salem until the weekend. Mrs. Rilla Howey boarded several students and teacher in her home.[7]
- 1877 - First Senior class graduated seven students: Ann (Gilbert) Schloss, Sarepeta (Henry) Lafler, Nina E. Pershing, Mary (App) Gable, W. F. McCauley, J. W. Parson and Anna M. King.[8]
- 1877 - Class of 1877 placed a large rock in the front yard. The rocks is believed to have been of glacial origin which was dug up from the basement of the school during construction. See .
