In 1850, the Wayne County Commissioners purchased 286 acres of farmland two miles east of Wooster, Ohio and by 1852 had built a 3-story brick building on basement walls of stone. The building originally contained 100 rooms which were heated by steam. It was named the Wayne County Infirmary and was intended to house the aged, sick, and homeless families and children who were not able to take care of themselves.
In August of 1852, Cyrus Segner was appointed the first superintendent of the facility. The facility was nearly self-sufficient with a large working farm and dairy operation run by able-bodied residents. They maintained huge gardens and canned their harvests. The dairy provided milk, cream, and butter. The farm remained in operation until the 1970s.
In 1919 the name was changed from the Wayne County Infirmary to the Wayne County Home. During the early 1930s there was a need for more room to care for people who needed constant care and a hospital and nurses home was built adjoining.
In 1983 the name was again changed from the Wayne County Home to the Wayne County Care Center.
