Col. Gerlach is the son of Frank C. and Johanna M. ({{Surname|Kaltwasser}}) {{Surname|Gerlach}}, immigrants from Wetzlar, Germany. In addition to his military service in the Spanish-American War and World War I, Col. Gerlach  attended the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and worked in pharmaceuticals, was postmaster of the City of Wooster, Ohio, and was superintendent of the Boys' Industrial School, a juvenile corrections facility near Lancaster, Ohio.
