"On Wednesday, September 31, 1888, a gathering of about sixty old and young met at the old homestead of Thomas Van Sweringen, Congress township, it being the home of and the tenth marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Dr. J. M. Ward, also birthday of Mrs. Ward. Relatives and friends assembled with friendly greeting and well filled baskets from which a repast worthy a king was taken and arranged by many house wives present. After partaking of such, the day was spent in social chat interspersed with music and games. The numerous gifts were presented with an appropriate address from Mr. D. Harnish and received with a response of feeling from Dr. J. M. Ward, and all who were present considered that the day had been spent in a manner ever to be remembered dispersed to their several homes. Is the sentiment of one that was present."
