"Just about one-fourth of a mile south of Shade Creek is where the sugar grove owned by Samuel Ewing is situated. It is nestled among the hills on the bank of Kill buck, and the tall oaks on the hills, the mammoth sycamores along the stream, the evergreens on the hillside, and the ivy vines which grow in abundance there, give the place a kind of weird aspect, one just suited in which to hold a picnic by the correspondents of the various papers of Wayne County, which took place on last Saturday as per former announcement. The day was beautiful. We believe nature put on her best garb for the occasion. About four or give hundred from various localities, with well filled baskets, were present. The occasion was a complete success. Sociability was the order of the day. We went there to get acquainted with our fellow correspondents, and whoever else we might meet. Appropriate remarks were made by Prof. L. S. Knight, Rev. J. W. Campbell, Capt. Van Doorn, Dr. J. M.Ward, T. B. Keeler, C. E. Slutz, Isaac Harned and J. W. Parsons. Miss Maud Reid read a beautiful poem. Bessie Campbell and Isa Garver favored us with a song. Dr. H. J. Sullivan, who was instrumental in arranging the affair, and to whom our gratitude is due, was our chairman, which position he filled with honor to himself. We believe the correspondents of Wayne County have a mission to fill. It is therefore important that we should be careful what we write., Whole communities are sometimes torn up by reckless writers, or the reputation of some one blackened. This is no credit to a correspondent. Le him be truthful and discreet. An association was formed, which will be known as "The Wayne County Correspondents Picnic Association." The officers were chosen were: President, Dr. H. J. Sullivan, Congress, Secretary, J. W. Parsons, Creston: Executive Committee, Capt. Van Doorn, Mrs. Van Doorn, Canaan, J. F. Simon, Miss Maud Reid, Congress, B. H. Smith, Cedar Valley, Miss McCoy golden Corners. We trust that this organization may prosper, and the good emanating from it be apparent."
