"The Congress High School debating teams defeated both Sterling High School teams at Congress and Sterling. At Congress the affirmative team consisting of Inez Stewart, Helen Marti, Joseph Weltmer, and Mabel Ruff alternate won a unanimous decision of the judges over the Sterling negative. Congress also took first in the oration and declamation. Mabel Ruff was orator and Kathryn Good declaimer. The Sterling debaters came here accompanied by a few fans with the purpose of winning which they showed throughout the debate. Although they presented good arguments the Congress teams arguments were better backed by quotations from officials. The rebuttal showed the spirit of both teams. Argument after argument was torn to pieces by opposing sides, but here also as in the constructive speeches the Congress team gave strong argument in backing up their points.

The Congress negative team consisting of Ruth Ickes, Mildred Stewart, Guy Johnson and Willard Devenney alternate won from the Sterling affirmative at Sterling.

Congress has started a debating record which they hope to keep. Three years ago they broke even with Sterling, winning the affirmative and losing the negative. Two years ago the teams won in both debates from the West Salem teams. Last year they were prepared to win from Burbank, but Burbank called the debates off. This year they was to be in a triangle with West Salem and Sterling, but West Salem withdrew.

It was through the coaching of Prof. Barnes and the co-operation of the students that spelled victory for the teams.

The question debated was, resolved. That the United States Government should subsidize the Merchant Marine. Two teachers and debater of Wooster College were the judges."
