"Village Dutchman Restaurant Buildings Finally Sell at Sheriff's Auction.

First National Bank of Orrville and Bank One of Canton both breathed a sigh of relief last Wednesday after a successful sheriff's sale finally found a buyer for the vacant Village Dutchman Restaurant property in Dalton.

The buildings, located at 48 and 52 West Main Street, became the property of First National Bank after the former owner, Paul Gordon declared bankruptcy. The buildings have set vacant for almost 2 1/2 years after Gordon closed the business on April 1, 1999. Other attempts to sell the buildings were unsuccessful.

Walking away with the winning bid on the real estate was Alex Naumoff Jr., 43 , of Orrville. Both buildings, that make up the restaurant, were sold as one item for $80,500.

Naumoff said he doesn't have any immediate plans for the downstairs of the buildings, but did say he has always wanted to open an ice cream parlor. He plans to work on getting the upstairs apartments ready to rent.

"I didn't want to pay this much for it, but I didn't want to go away empty handed either," Naumoff said. Naumoff added, he might ask the Dalton community what type of business they would like to see go in the vacant buildings.

Approximately sever bidders were on hand for the August 8 auction hoping to get a bargain on the auction.

The only other bidder, bidding against Naumoff was Randy Martell of Apple Creek. He and his brother Rusty had hoped to re-open the business as a restaurant again. "Rusty and myself both worked at the Dutchman Restaurant about 25 years ago and we thought it would be nice to have a restaurant in Dalton again," said Martell.

Both Martell and Naumoff said after the sale they had hoped to pay in the $75,000 range.

Following a minimum opening bid of $45,000 the bidding took a fast pace escalation. Going in $1,000 increments, both Martell and Naumoff kept the bidding going until the $80,500 bid. Bidders took a brief break with Naumoff holding the last bid of $80,500. After the break, bidding resumed, but no one topped Naumoff's bid.

Wayne County Sheriff's deputy, Lt. Walty Szentpetery, who is in charge of sheriff's sales, said he hoped getting the bidders on site to hold the sale might get it sold this time. "The buildings have potential, and I thought that the third time we should get them on site to see it," he said. This is the third time for a sheriff's sale.

All back taxes, of approximately $5,000, were taken off the purchase price. Auctioneer Pete Stauffer directed the sale."
