George P. Smith (1788-1873)

George P. Smith was the son of Phillip Smith II and Agnes Waits Smith. He was born in 1788 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. He came with his family to Jefferson County, Ohio when he was 15 years old. In March 1812, George P. Smith, his brother Phillip III and his brother-in-law James McIntire floated a raft up the Ohio river adventuring their way to Wayne County, Ohio. On 2 May 1812, he married Sarah Miller in Jefferson County, Ohio. George and Sarah Smith children were: Isaac (1814-?), Nancy (1816-?), Catherine (1818-?), Phillip (1820-?) and Enoch (1824-1889). George P. Smith died 21 January 1873 at the age of 83 years. His wife, Sarah, died three years previously. Both were buried in the Old Cemetery in Apple Creek, East Union Township, Wayne County, Ohio. In 1820, George P. Smith purchased the east half of the northeast quarter of section 30 in East Union Township, Wayne County, Ohio. In the 1826 Wayne County Tax List, he owned 1 horse, 2 cows, 80 acres of land on the east half of the northeast section 30. Total value was $199.
