- Died 2 Apr 1838
- Republican Advocate 5-Apr-1838
- Died, at his residence in this place, on Monday last, of bilious cholic, Mr. John Hemperly, in the fifty-third year of his age. In this dispensation we have another demonstration of the truth of the adage, "in the midst of life we are in death." On Sabbath day, the deceased was apparently in perfect health and attended church; dined as usual; was seized in the afternoon and by nine o'clock on Monday morning, he was a corpse; his disease from the first, refusing in the least to yield to the most assiduous efforts of the medical art for his relief. Mr. Hemperly was a native of central Pennsylvania but had long resided in the West, and for the last eighteen years had been an inhabitant of Wooster. He was a man of excellent spirit, - sincere, open, frank, in his intercourse with the world; and possessed a kind and hospitable disposition. He was indeed one of nature's best and noblest works, an honest man; and his memory will long be cherished as such, by a large circle of friends and acquaintances. He has left a widow and several children to mourn their sad bereavement.

- OGS Report 1989
- Peter Henney, aged 82 years 6 months and 13 days. In the years 1817 he was joined in marriage to Christina Strayer, with whom he lived 58 years, a peaceable and happy life. She preceded him nearly three years to the glory world. He was one of the pioneers of Wayne Cty Oh, having settled in Congress township in the year 1815, when the country was quite new, in fact a wildness, inhabited by the Red men of the forest. After forty years he sold his home and emigrated to Henry Cty Ill. Sometime in October he came back from Illinois to visit his two daughters in Wayne Cty. On the evening of Feb 12, while staying with his daughter and son-in-law (John Hines) he retired to his room at night in apparent good health. The next morning he rose from his bed, lit the lamp and dressed himself and wound his watch. His daughter, Mrs. Hines, heard a noise as the moving of a chair in the room, she went to the room and found him dead, kneeling at a chair in the attitude of prayer, his head resting on his arm, which was his custom from the time he embraced religion. He leaves 7 children, 40 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren. Before his death he bequeathed $100, for missionary purposes to the Ev. Association, also the same amount to the U.B. Church. His remains were taken to Henry Co., Ill. For interment
