Timeline
- 1890 - September, Fire at Thoman's Tannery: The tannery of E. Thoman was badly damaged by fire last Friday afternoon. It is thought the fire originated from the boiler. A spark set fire to the roof and and everything was dry as tinder, besides being thoroughly saturated with oil, the flames soon spread and the upper story of the main tanning building was totally destroyed together with a considerable amount of leather and machinery. The department saved all the neighboring buildings and the loss was confined to the one structure. Loss about $2,000; insured for $1,800. It will be rebuilt: During the progress of the fire a man names Joseph Blymesser who resides at Cedar Valley climbed upon the roof of the stock house and in attempting to walk across it slipped and fell to the ground, about twenty-feet, lighting upon his face and breast. He was picked up and after being removed and washed he rallied and was found to have escaped serious injury, though it was thought he was seriously hurt.[1]
