Ben M. McIlvaine was the son of Mr. and Mrs. George A. McIlvaine and was born in the Village of Jackson, Wayne County, Ohio. His early education was obtained in the country school and later in the Creston High School. He completed a business course in the Wooster Business College. He served as deputy county recorder for six years before running for the office of County Recorder in 1918 as a Democrat candidate. He was elected County Treasurer.
