Comprehensive History

Apple Creek Presbyterian Church was established 1815 in, Apple Creek. It was the first Presbyterian church in Wayne County. Scotch-Irish from Beaver and Fayette Counties in Pennsylvania formed the church. In 1926 the congregation joined with the Methodists to form Apple Creek United Church. 40 members opposed the merger and formed Calvary Presbyterian Church. Final dissolution of this church came in 1974 when members voted to join the Methodist denomination. Sources found for this church were History of Wayne County, Ohio, Ben Douglass, 1878, page 621, Beginnings of Wayne County in 1812, Richard Smith (compiler), page 33, History of Wayne County, Ohio, B.F. Bowen & Co., 1910, Vol. 1. pages 261 & 262, History of Wayne County, Ohio, 1987, page 64 and History of the Apple Creek Presbyterian Church 1815-1915 (located in the Genealogy Dept. at Wayne County Public Library). A cemetery exists with the name of the church. The 'Find-A-Grave' website has the following listing: "Also known as the Edinburg Cemetery and Old Presbyterian Cemetery, it is located on the north side of Church Street east of US Route 250 in East Union Township. The cemetery is located in East Union Township, Wayne County, Ohio, and is # 11470 (Old Apple Creek Presbyterian Cemetery / Old Presbyterian Cemetery / Applecreek West Cemetery / Edinburg Cemetery) in “Ohio Cemeteries 1803-2003”, compiled by the Ohio Genealogical Society."
