Wayne County, Ohio was named in honor of Major General Anthony Wayne.

Anthony Wayne was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania on January 1, 1745 to Isaac and Elizabeth Iddings Wayne. He was one of four children. In 1766, he married Mary Penrose. Anthony and Mary had a daughter, Margretta Wayne and a son, Isaac Wayne. Anthony's extra-marital affair with Mary Vining of Delaware eventually broke up the marriage.

Anthony worked as a tanner and surveyor prior to his military and political career. He serviced in the Continental Army from 1775-1783. In 1783, Anthony began his political career. He served for two years in the Pennsylvania General Assembly. Anthony later continued his military career in the United States Army from 1792-1796. He negotiated the Treaty of Greenville which was at one time the southern border of Wayne County, Northwest Territory.
