The 400-acre farm passed by grant to Joseph Stratton, but the house was built by Daniel Stratton with completion date listed in the family record as April 3, 1860. The farmhouse was built generously, with 12 rooms, to fit Stratton's large family, and features a wide front porch of tongue and groove construction.[1] Almost all the interior woodworking was done in black walnut from the adjoining woods.[2]
The novelist Gene Stratton Porter was cousin to the Strattons who lived here and often visited.
