It was operated by Bill Syrios (known as [[William Syriopoulos]] until shortening the family name in the 1940's <ref> 1943 Wooster City Directory </ref>) until his death in 1957 <ref> January 7, 1957: "W. K. Syrious, 'Shack' Owner 41 Years, Dies" The Daily Record p. 2 </ref> Under his care, the Shack grew from a cafe to a restaurant <ref> 1954 Wooster City Directory </ref> and earned its reputation as a "home away from home" for many [[College of Wooster]] students <ref> December 01, 1996: "A Home Away From Home For Generations of Students" The Daily Record </ref>. After Bill Syrios' death, the business continued to stay in the family.
