RUNAWAY AND FIRE SAME DAY
Junk Dealer Starts New Year Two Mishaps, Neither Being Serious
L. Cantor, junk dealer, residing at (338?) South Market street, would prefer to turn the calendar back to 1916. Cantor managed to get thru New Year's day without any unusual accident, but when the first working day came along, the story was a different one.
At 7:30 Tuesday morning his team ran away, going down East Liberty street and crashing into a telephone pole in front of the Leonard Saal meat market. One horse was slightly hurt. At 5:40 Tuesday evening, less than 12 hours after the runaway accident, the fire department was summoned to the Cantor home. It was the year's first fire alarm. The bell was not sounded but Chief Edward Snavely and two firemen responded with the Chief's car. A coal heating stove had overturned in the home and the coals were threatening to create a real blaze. One stove leg had been improperly adjusted and when it fell out the stove fell over, through a door and into a bedroom. The damage was slight.
