Established in 1872, the company was located just west of Wooster "because of the very fine shale deposit in this area"<ref>"Medal Brick and Tile Co.," Wayne County Topics, June 1957, p.6</ref>. Initially established to produce paving brick for highway construction, the company later expanded its products to foundation tile and architectural face brick.
