John Tormie was born 6 October 1855 to James and Margaret (Coulter) Tormie. John was one of 6 children: Stephen, Ida, Anna, Elizabeth "Lizzie", Maggie, Hannah, and James. John's parents were from Ireland and are buried in Pike, Illinois.

John Tormie married Phoebe J. Martin in 1878 in Pike County, Illinois. Following his marriage, he and his new wife moved to Wooster from Pittsfield. They had one daughter together, Pearl May Tormie.

John Tormie was murdered by John Callahan. John Callahan was found guilty and was to be hanged. This was a public hanging and was held at the Wayne County Fairgrounds.
