Col. Gerlach is the son of Frank C. and Johanna M. ({{Surname|Kaltwasser}}) {{Surname|Gerlach}}, immigrants from Wetzlar, Germany. In addition to his military service in the Spanish-American War and World War I, Col. Gerlach  attended the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and worked in pharmaceuticals, was postmaster of the City of Wooster, Ohio, and
