Many tuition schools in early Ohio were log houses about 18 feet square that were heated by huge fireplaces. They were lighted by one window, which in the earliest days was covered by a sheet of white paper stretched over a wood frame. The paper was oiled to help repel water and permit light to penetrate the dark cabin. |
