Biographical Sketches

Bertha was the 2nd born child to Philip Ellsperman and Louise D. Miller Ellsperman. She was born on 18 December 1875 in Wooster, Ohio. She was the first official librarian of the Wooster Public Library, beginning her tenure in 1897. In 1901, the Library Board of Trustees asked for her resignation. Two years later, on 12 November 1903, she married William B. Chancellor, pastor of a church in Richville, MO. On 21 January 1911, Bertha gave birth to her first and only child, Marian Louise Chancellor. The time of motherhood was short lived. Bertha passed away 4 days later, on 25 Jan 1911, at the young age of 35 years. She left a mourning husband and a 4 day old daughter. Her body was brought back from Rockville, IN to Wooster, OH for burial in the Wooster Cemetery.

Bertha's parents were married on 13 November 1873 [1] On the marriage record, the bride's name is given as Laura D. Miller rather than Louise. To this union were born 8 children. However, one did not survive into adulthood. The children born to this union included:

  • Adam Ellsperman, born 19 May 1874 [2]
  • Bertha Ellsperman, born 18 Dec 1875 [3]
  • Estella May Ellsperman, born 26 May 1877 [4]
  • Maud Ellsperman, born 20 Aug 1878 [5]
  • Lulu Ellsperman, born 12 Sep 1880 [6]
  • Robert Ellsperman, born 1 May 1882 [7]
  • Fred Ellsperman, born Oct 1884 [8]
  • Jean Ellsperman, born 18 Nov 1885 [9]

Bertha's father, Philip Ellsperman descended from German parents. Louise's parents were born from Pennsylvania. [10] Philip Ellsperman was born 20 oct 1852 and died 29 Dec 1916. Louise D. (Miller) Ellsperman was born 3 Aug 1850 and died 15 Jun 1922. Both are buried with Bertha, their daughter, in section 16, lot 636 of the Wooster Cemetery. [11]

According to Bertha's obituary, she graduated from Wooster High School in 1893. This was confirmed in the Wooster Alumni Directory for 2008 [12] Following high school, Bertha attended the Conservatory of Music, taking voice culture. She had a fine contralto voice and continued singing in the church choir. She had joined the First Presbyterian church at a young age and eventually taught Sunday school class. She was survived by her husband and small daughter of Rockville, Parke Co, IN; parents of Wooster, Ohio; and siblings: Adam Ellsperman and Robert Ellsperman of Zanesville, Ohio; Fred Ellsperman of Athens, Ohio; Mrs. Walter D. (Jean Louise) Nice of Columbus, Ohio; and Misses Maude and Estella Ellsperman at home. [13]
