| The Eighth Ohio Volunteer Infantry was commanded by the late Colonel Curtis V. {{Surname|Hard}} of Wooster. The regiment was organized at Akron, April 26, 1898. It participated in the expedition which resulted in the capture of Santiago de Cuba and was a part of the Fifth Army Corps which composed the troops chosen for that campaign. The regiment was composed of these units: Company A, Bucyrus; Company B, Akron; Company C, Polk; Company D, Wooster; Company E, East Liverpool; Company F, Canton; Company G, Wadsworth; Company H, Shreve; Company I, Canton; Company K, Alliance; Company L, Canton; Company M, Mansfield, Band, Akron; Hospital Corps, from various company stations. The regiment was taken to Cuba on the steamer St. Paul, which was commanded by Captain George {{Surname|Sigsbee}}, former commander of the ill-fated Maine.
