1918 Letter to and Reply From Captain Sprow

This document is a letter composed by Col. Gerlach requesting certification of a list of all casualties from Company D of the 146th Regiment. The letter has been altered by Capt. Sprow, both in typed text and handwritten remarks regarding the requested list on the second page. The original letter is dated December 14th of 1918, and the reply is dated December 20th of 1918. This document is found in the Frank Gerlach file.

Hq. 145th Infantry, American E. F., 14 December, 1918.

My dear Captain Sprow:

Will you kindly do me a favor. I would like to send to Wooster, Ohio, a casualty list for Company D of the 146th. Wooster, as you know, is my hometown, and would like to send an authentic list.

The list here inclosed was furnished by Captain Redick of Company D but he has no one reported as missing. If it is not too much trouble, will you have some one check your records in order that I may have a correct record to send home. - There may be some missing on this list.- You know how important this is.

I also wish to ask you if I can send this list direct or must I send it thru the Central Records for their checking?

I often think about you and your family and wonder how the children got along during the epidemic of influenza. Thus far my family have been fortunate enough to escape it.

I have been quite busy with my duties in connection with the 145th, and like to work very much. It will be quite pleasant again to get into a training sector where we can parade our organizations and actually see our troops at work. I hope we will find better weather.

I was in Germany this week, along with a party of other officers, and enjoyed it very much. I would be mighty glad to see you some time.
