===Lateral Files===

Lateral files, also known as vertical files in other collections, consist of various newspaper clippings, family group sheets, ancestor charts, Bible records, family and local history paper memorabilia, and photos among many other types of documents.  They are called lateral files because they are stored in lateral filing cabinets.

Our lateral files are divided in a few categories.  Loose leaf family histories are found in 8 of the 12 drawers and have already been discussed in greater detail earlier.  In one of the remaining 4 drawers, researchers will find the Ohio Genealogical Society chapter newsletters as well as general information on Ohio and non-Ohio states.  The next two drawers consist of Wayne County, Ohio information.  The fourth and final drawer concludes Wayne County, Ohio information and includes general information on such topics as abbreviations; epidemics; deciphering handwriting; naming customs; migration patterns; doing research on German, Irish, Scotch-Irish, and Jewish ancestry; and the Whiskey Rebellion.

Lateral files are organized within each category alphabetically by subject heading.  There are three exceptions to this generality.  Our department has a collection of information on one-room school houses in Wayne County, Ohio.  These are located in the fourth drawer.  They are organized by townships.  The townships are in alphabetical order.  In the third drawer, there is a section of information on Wayne County, Ohio churches and Wayne County, Ohio military information.  The church lateral files are organized in alphabetical order by denomination.  The military information is organized in chronological order by the time period of the war.  Twentieth century military information pertaining to Wayne County, Ohio is very incomplete.

Many individuals question the value of lateral or vertical files, especially considering the amount of information that is available through the Internet.  For a local history collection, they are very important.  Newspapers are not digitized nor are the early newspapers indexed.  Over the years, both researchers and staff have taken the time to make photos of important articles and file them by subject heading.  Since there is no index, and the newspapers are not key word searchable, the only way researchers may find information on various topics is to (1) scroll through the microfilmed copies of the newspapers page by page or (2) hope that someone has already formed a lateral/vertical file on the subject of interest.

** Our department does have a small, growing collection of photographs.  These are generally donated to our department.  Some are labeled and some are not.  These are not catalogued or organized at this time.  They are kept in the workroom in one of two places.  Most of the collection is stored in the six drawer wooden cabinet.  Some are original photographs while others are copies of the originals.  The second place is in the two drawer metal lateral file cabinet.  The top drawer has photo albums on the Rumbaugh family.  The bottom drawer has various photos in archival safe envelope.

** In 2006, the department was donated several notebooks of intersection photographs.  These are presently stored on the lower level in the Operation Center at 304 N. Market St in Wooster.  These are not catalogued
