Brief History

The earliest mention of the Wooster Literary Association in Wooster can be found in the Wooster Democrat on 6 June 1844 on page 3. At times, it is mentioned in the early newspapers as the Wooster Literary Society.

The Wooster Literary Society would meet on regular basis to discuss and dispute pieces of literature. Announced in the Wooster Democrat on Thursday, January 20, 1848 on page 3, the Society was meeting at the Wooster Academy. The question for discussion: "Is the present war with Mexico justifiable on the part of the United States?" The Leading Disputants in the affirmative included: George Rex, T.S. Johnson an Eugene Pardee. The Leading Disputants in the negative included: John P. Jeffries Smauel Hemphill, and Col. John Sloan. The Essayist was listed as John McSweeney. E. Foreman was the secretary of the Wooster Literary Society at the time of the announcement in the newspaper.
