The history of the Wayne County Courthouse can be broken down into three different eras, as there were three different buildings that stood on the courthouse site. You can get more detailed histories of each building's era by following the links below:

  • Wayne County Courthouse (1878-Present) - Third courthouse built in 1878, is still standing on the NW corner of W. Liberty and N. Market streets on the Public Square of downtown Wooster, Ohio.

Timeline

  • 1819 - The first court house was built in 1819.
  • 1829 - First courthouse was destroyed by fire.
  • 1830-1831 - Second courthouse was built.
  • 1856 - A county-wide vote to replace the 2nd courthouse was defeated.
  • 1878 - The 2nd courthouse was condemned and deemed unsafe for use and was demolished.
  • 1878 - The third court house was built in 1878.
  • 1919 - Court house built.
  • 1949 - Approx. Fire.
  • 1969 - May 20, Fire.
  • 1973 - Registered on the National Register of Historic Places as the Wayne County Courthouse District (#73001551).
  • 1976 - Registered as a Category:Wayne County Historical Landmark by the Wayne County Historical Society of Ohio.
  • 1978 - Boundary of the historic places district is expanded as Wooster Public Square Historic District (Boundary Increase) (#78002213).
  • 2015 - Restoration and preservation of the external structure and ornaments of the building.
