Walter R. Foss, 73, of 1011 N. Grant St., Wooster, died suddenly Thursday night at his home. He was on the Board of Directors of Wooster Brush Co. and was a charter member of Wooster Rotary Club.

Memorial services will be Monday at 4:30 p.m. at McConnell Funeral Home with Rev. John Kindsvatter of Zion Lutheran Church and Rev. Eugene Buxton of St. James Episcopal officiating. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be in Wooster Cemetery.

The family requests that contributions be make to Wooster Community Hospital in lieu of flowers. He was born Oct. 9, 1897, in Wooster to Walter David and Mary (Jolley) Foss. He graduated from Wooster High School and received an A.B. degree from Harvard in 1919.

Foss was in business for 48 years with the Wooster Brush Company which had been founded by his grandfather. While with the company, he served as president and later as chairman of the Board of Directors.

He helped to form the Wooster Rotary Club in 1920. He was a member of Masonic Lodge, YMCA, Cleveland University Club, area Harvard Clubs, National Paint, Varnish and Lacquer Association, Mandis Society (which he served as president), and Wooster Country Club of which he was a director.

During World War I he fought in the U.S. Infantry.

During World War II he serviced on the War Production Board and Paint Brush Manufacturers Committee.

He also served as a member of advisory board of the College of Wooster Inn and was first chairman of Wooster United Fund.

He has been active in the Republican Party.[1]

He is survived by his wife, Sybil; a step-son, Robert Holloway Moore; a sister, Mildred Thompson; and four nephews, including David Foss of Wooster.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Camilla Burdett.
