Field Name Required Description Values
name yes Name of building wikitext
native_name no Name of building in native language wikitext

status no useful to show the construction status of new buildings. The keywords to the right can be used to produce the appropriate colored status:
  • "built", "completed", "finished" or "complete" = Complete;

  • "demolished" = Demolished;
  • "on hold" = On hold;
  • "incomplete", "unfinished" or "under construction" = Under construction;

location_town no Settlement where the building is located wikitext (can contain links)
location_country no Country where the building is located wikitext (can contain links)
iso_region no ISO region code where the building is located wikitext (can contain links)
latd, latm, lats, latNS
longd, longm, longEW
no Geographic coordinates of location See map and coordinates for details

top_floor no Number of the highest floor expressed as a numerical value
floor_count no Number of floors expressed as a numerical value
seating_type no
seating_capacity no Numbers of seats available
grounds_area no Area of associated land, in hectares, square metres or equivalent. Use {{Convert}} if appropriate
awards no listed awards should meet the notability criteria for its own non-redirect article in the English Wikipedia. Red-linked entries are acceptable if the award's notability is verifiable, and it is reasonable to expect an article could be forthcoming in the future. This standard prevents the infobox award section from becoming an indiscriminate list.
ren_awards no listed awards should meet the notability criteria for its own non-redirect article in the English Wikipedia. Red-linked entries are acceptable if the award's notability is verifiable, and it is reasonable to expect an article could be forthcoming in the future. This standard prevents the infobox award section from becoming an indiscriminate list.
parking no Information on the building's parking facilities (e.g. number of spaces or lots)

Map and coordinates

It's usually not necessary to use the coordinates= parameter.

  • The latitude and longitude of the building may be specified:
    • in decimal degrees, using latitude= and longitude= OR
    • in degrees/minutes/seconds, using latd=, latm=, lats=, latNS=, longd=, longm=, longs=, and longEW=.
  • To display coordinates at the top of the page, set coordinates_display= to any non-blank value. Otherwise coordinates will appear in the infobox only.
  • The ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 or ISO 3166-2 region code can often be determined automatically, based on the location_country= parameter.
    • To override the automatic value, use the iso_region= parameter.

One advantage of omitting the coordinates= parameter is that you can display a {{Location map}} without duplicating coordinates.

{{Infobox building
...
| coordinates = <!-- Template {{Coord}} if map is not used; empty if map is displayed. -->
| coordinates_display = <!-- non-blank to display coordinates at the top of the page. -->
| iso_region          = <!-- To override any automatically determined region code. -->
| map_type            = <!-- Location name used for Template:Location map -->
| map_alt             = <!-- Alternative text for map image, see WP:ALT for details -->
| map_caption = <!-- Text to be displayed below map; for no caption enter "map_caption="; if the parameter is omitted then the caption will be "Marker text (location map name)" -->
| relief = <!-- Any non-blank value (yes, 1, etc.) will cause the template to display a relief map image, where available. -->
...
}}
Parameters to specify coordinates in degrees, minutes, and seconds of arc:
{{Infobox building
...
| latd   = <!-- ''latitude'' degrees -->
| latm   = <!-- ''latitude'' minutes -->
| lats   = <!-- ''latitude'' seconds -->
| latNS  = <!-- latitude: S=south, N=north (default) -->
| longd  = <!-- ''longitude'' degrees -->
| longm  = <!-- ''longitude'' minutes -->
| longs  = <!-- ''longitude'' seconds -->
| longEW = <!-- longitude: W=west, E=east (default) -->
...
}}
Parameters to specify coordinates in decimal degrees:
{{Infobox building
...
| latitude = <!-- ''latitude'' (decimal format; enter negative numbers for southern latitude) -->
| longitude = <!-- ''longitude'' (decimal format; enter negative numbers for western longitude) -->
...
}}

Note: coordinates in decimal degrees are sensitive to extra whitespace in the parameters:

  • Incorrect: | longitude = - 123.45
  • Correct: | longitude = -123.45

Microformat

The HTML mark up produced by this template includes an hCard microformat, which makes the place-name and location parsable by computers, either acting automatically to catalogue article across Wikipedia, or via a browser tool operated by a person, to (for example) add the subject to an address book. Within the hCard is a Geo microformat, which additionally makes the coordinates (latitude & longitude) parsable, so that they can be, say, looked up on a map, or downloaded to a GPS unit. For more information about the use of microformats on Wikipedia, please see the microformat project.

Sub-templates

If the place or venue has an "established", "founded", "opened" or similar date, use {{start date}} unless the date is before 1583 CE.

If it has a URL, use {{URL}}.

Please do not remove instances of these sub-templates.

Classes

hCard uses HTML classes including:

  • adr
  • agent
  • category
  • county-name
  • extended-address
  • fn
  • label
  • locality
  • nickname
  • note
  • org
  • region
  • street-address
  • uid
  • url
  • vcard

Geo is produced by calling {{coord}}, and uses HTML classes:

  • geo
  • latitude
  • longitude

Please do not rename or remove these classes nor collapse nested elements which use them.

Precision

When giving coordinates, please use an appropriate level of precision. Do not use {{coord}}'s |name= parameter.
